While visiting the Potter League Animal Shelter this spring, we heard about a local pet service company that offered a unique wedding service to couples who wanted to include their pet in the big day. The service included grooming the pets, bringing then to the ceremony or reception and taking them away for a fun filled mini-vacation after the event so the couple was free to focus on their human guests. We thought this was an absolutely BRILLIANT idea and of course we had to find who came up with the idea.
Lucky Dog Resort owner Laurie had a few things to saw about her world of luxury dog boarding and daycare destination, located minutes from downtown Newport.
Q: Tell me about Lucky Dog Resort. How did it get started?
A: We designed Lucky Dog as a Resort, NOT a kennel. Dogs play and stay in the lap of luxury; whether in the Lucky Dog House (beautifully appointed with doggy artwork, comfy couches, and real beds) or in our Bungalows (climate-controlled private suites with chandeliers and tempered glass doors). Our model is highly social, so all Lucky Dogs have to enjoy the company of other dogs. I started Lucky Dog in October of 2015, leaving my career in Executive Sales (after 24 years) to pursue my calling: making animals happy.
Q: Tell me about the wedding package you have
A: We understand, for many couples, their wedding wouldn’t be complete without their best friend, their dog! Chauffeured rides to and from the venue, kind, professional handling during pictures and/or ceremony, and luxury overnight accommodations are our forte. We take care of the doggie details so the couple can enjoy their day!
Q: What do the pets do while their owners are at the wedding?
A: Pups who are staying with us during the wedding hang-out with their new four-legged friends, play outside in our two huge yards, and always get lots of love from our staff. Pups participating in the wedding day have fun at Lucky Dog until it’s time for them to steal the show!
Q: What’s the best part of your job?
A: Everyday, I get to fulfill my childhood dream of working with animals, and dogs are basically the happiest creatures on earth! Wedding Dogs are THE BEST! I can’t believe I get to escort these beloved beauties, dressed in their finest to the most beautiful venues, with the most loving parents. It’s a dream come true!
Q: What was the best wedding you’ve ever taken a pet to?
A: Honestly, every wedding has been incredibly special in its own way. It’s heartwarming to see how much each dog is loved, not just by their parents, but by everyone attending. The Basset Hound Brothers (Moose and Fred) in their White Tux and Tails was beyond adorable!
Over the years, we’ve seen quite a few couples include their pets in their wedding festivities. Inevitably, as much fun as it is to include a pet, it always boils down to “who is going to take care of the pet after the pictures?” Pet duty shouldn’t be the responsibility of the bride, groom, parents, or even friends. Let your self and your guests enjoy your special day by utilizing a pet wedding service. It’s quite literally the best of both worlds!
